Animating Renaissance Paintings as GIFs

Animating Renaissance Paintings as GIFs!

So... This week we were introduced to creating gifs in Photoshop.

We were given A3 portraits of serious looking people from 1500s European aristocracy, portraits of noble men and women and we were told to recreating the stories in the portraits by using the material workshop, cuts from magazines. The idea was to think: New backgrounds, humor, bling, quirky, funny, opposites: Old and modern, before and now, peers of society versus modern hipsters and street art.

I found this amazing painting of a young woman holding a baby unicorn. The painting is called "Young woman with unicorn" and was painted by Raphael around year 1505 or 1506. It is on display the Galleria Borghese in Rome. The fascination with unicorns from that period of time was prominent in a completely different way than it is today. So I tried to illustrate the clash of the two unicorn-obsessions; between the legendary creatures of magical origin to the pop-culture cute, sparkly, fabulous animals.

Here are a few process pics and the gif at the bottom. Enjoy!
